If you are a Hong Kong resident weighing your options in 2026, or a foreign professional deciding where to base yourself, you may be looking at two very different routes — and the first thing to understand is that they serve completely different purposes.
The BNO Visa is a UK immigration route for Hong Kong residents with British National (Overseas) status, leading to permanent residence and citizenship in the United Kingdom. A Hong Kong employment visa is issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and allows foreign professionals to live and work in Hong Kong. One takes you out of Hong Kong. The other brings you in — or keeps you here.
This guide explains both clearly, compares eligibility, rights, costs, and timelines, and helps you work out which route applies to your situation.
Who Qualifies for Each Visa
The BNO Visa — who can apply:
The BNO Visa is for people who hold British National (Overseas) status — a specific British nationality created in 1985 for eligible Hong Kong residents who registered before the 1997 handover. BN(O) status is not the same as British citizenship. It does not by itself give you the right to live or work anywhere — but it does make you eligible for the BNO Visa route to the UK.
To qualify for the BNO Visa as a primary applicant, you must:
- Hold BN(O) status (registered before 1 July 1997)
- Be ordinarily resident in Hong Kong (if applying from outside the UK)
- Have sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependants for the first six months in the UK
- Have no serious criminal history or grounds for refusal on suitability
From 9 February 2026, the route was expanded. Adult children of BN(O) status holders who were born on or after 1 July 1979 — meaning they were under 18 at the time of the 1997 handover — can now apply independently of their parents under the BNO Adult Child route (previously called the Household Member route). They can include their own partners and children in the application.
Eligible family members who can apply alongside a BN(O) status holder include: spouse or civil partner, unmarried partner, and dependent children under 18.
The BNO Visa does not require a job offer, an employer sponsor, a minimum salary, or any investment. Over 230,000 BNO Visas have been granted since the scheme launched in January 2021.
The Hong Kong Employment Visa — who can apply:
Hong Kong's employment visa is for foreign nationals (non-Hong Kong residents and non-permanent residents) who want to work in Hong Kong. It is issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department (IMMD) and comes in several routes. The most relevant for most professionals are:
General Employment Policy (GEP): the main route for skilled professionals. Requires a confirmed job offer from a Hong Kong employer, qualifications or experience that are of value and not readily available locally, and a remuneration package commensurate with the prevailing market rate for the role. The GEP is quota-free and not sector-specific. Chinese nationals from Mainland China do not qualify under the GEP — they apply under the separate Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals (ASMTP).
Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS): launched December 2022, this is Hong Kong's open work visa for high earners and top-university graduates. No job offer is required at the time of application. Eligibility falls into three categories:
- Category A: annual income of HKD 2,500,000 or more in the preceding 12 months
- Category B: degree from a top globally-ranked university (currently approximately 198 qualifying institutions) with at least 3 years of work experience
- Category C: degree from a qualifying top university with less than 3 years of experience, subject to an annual quota of 10,000
The TTPS visa is initially valid for 2 years, is portable between employers, and the candidate applies directly to the Immigration Department without needing employer sponsorship at the point of application.
Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS): a points-based scheme for highly skilled individuals who wish to settle in Hong Kong without a prior job offer. Quota-limited and typically suited to applicants with strong professional profiles exploring opportunities in Hong Kong.
Rights and Restrictions Compared
BNO Visa — what you can and cannot do in the UK:
Rights:
- Live in the UK for the duration of the visa (2.5 or 5 years per grant, renewable)
- Work in any employment or self-employment without restriction or employer sponsorship — except as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
- Study at any UK educational institution including state schools (for children) and universities
- Access NHS healthcare
- After 5 years of continuous residence: apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- One year after ILR: apply for British citizenship
Restrictions:
- No access to public funds (welfare benefits) unless in specific financial hardship circumstances — and only after a formal application to lift the condition
- Must not exceed 180 days of absence from the UK in any 12-month period (to protect the path to ILR)
- Immigration Health Surcharge is payable: for adults, HKD 1,530 (approximately) for a 2.5-year visa, plus additional amounts for dependants
- Cannot hold the BNO Visa and maintain primary residence in Hong Kong at the same time — the visa requires ordinary residence in the UK
Hong Kong Employment Visa (GEP / TTPS) — what you can and cannot do in Hong Kong:
Rights:
- Live and work in Hong Kong under the employment condition
- Bring eligible dependants (spouse and children under 18) to join you
- After 7 years of continuous ordinary residence in Hong Kong: eligible to apply for permanent residency (the right of abode)
- Work for the sponsoring employer (GEP) or for any employer (TTPS — more flexible)
- Apply for a Hong Kong Identity Card
Restrictions:
- GEP visa is tied to the sponsoring employer — changing jobs requires a change of visa condition or new application
- Cannot engage in work outside the scope of employment condition without approval
- Must maintain continuous ordinary residence in Hong Kong for the 7-year permanent residency pathway
- TTPS holders who do not secure employment within the 2-year visa period must leave or reapply
Application Process Differences
Applying for the BNO Visa (to go to the UK):
The application is submitted online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal at gov.uk. BN(O) and HKSAR passport holders can verify identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app — fingerprint biometrics are only required if the chip checker fails or the app cannot be used, in which case attendance at a visa application centre is required.
Key documents required:
- Valid passport confirming BN(O) status (a BNO passport is preferred but status alone is sufficient — you do not need to renew an expired BNO passport if you can evidence your status)
- Proof of ordinary residence in Hong Kong (HKID, utility bills, employer letter, bank statements, payslips)
- Evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself and dependants for the first 6 months in the UK
- Evidence of relationship with any dependants applying with you
- Valid tuberculosis (TB) test certificate (where required for Hong Kong applicants — check current requirements on GOV.UK before applying)
Application fee: GBP 206 for a 2.5-year visa; GBP 285 for a 5-year visa per applicant (plus the Immigration Health Surcharge)
Processing time: standard processing is 12 weeks from submission; priority and super-priority services are available at additional cost for faster decisions
Applying for a Hong Kong Employment Visa (GEP):
The application is submitted online through the Hong Kong Immigration Department's portal, or in person, or by post. Forms ID 990A (employee) and ID 990B (employer) are completed and submitted together as a joint application. The employer acts as sponsor and must demonstrate a genuine business need for the role and that the position cannot be readily filled by a local candidate.
Key documents required from the applicant:
- Valid passport and recent photographs
- Academic certificates and professional qualifications
- Updated CV and employment history
- Signed employment contract with the Hong Kong employer
Key documents required from the sponsoring employer:
- Business Registration Certificate
- Company profile and supporting financial documents
- Sponsorship letter explaining the role, salary, and justification for hiring a non-local candidate
- Evidence that the position cannot be filled locally (where applicable)
Application fee: HKD 230 per application (non-refundable regardless of outcome)
Processing time: 4 to 6 weeks for standard GEP applications. As of 1 March 2026, the renewal application window has been extended to 90 days before expiry, giving applicants and employers significantly more lead-time.
TTPS applicants apply directly without an employer — the process is faster and simpler since no sponsorship letter is required at the point of application.
Which Route Is Faster
For a straightforward, well-documented case:
BNO Visa standard processing: approximately 12 weeks. Priority services can reduce this to a few days or a week, at significantly higher cost. The overall timeline from decision to departure also depends on how quickly you can organise your move.
Hong Kong GEP employment visa: 4 to 6 weeks for most clean applications. This is notably faster than the BNO Visa standard processing, and the applicant does not need to physically relocate before getting a decision.
Hong Kong TTPS visa: similar timeline to GEP, 4 to 6 weeks, but with the added advantage of no employer sponsor required at application — making it operationally faster for eligible high-earners and top-university graduates who are already in Hong Kong or can time their arrival.
The faster route in absolute terms is almost always the Hong Kong employment visa — particularly under the TTPS. But speed is rarely the deciding factor. The two visas are not alternatives for the same destination. You cannot substitute a BNO Visa for a Hong Kong work visa or vice versa — they take you to different countries.
Which One Actually Applies to You
The simplest way to determine your route:
You hold BN(O) status and are considering relocating to the UK: the BNO Visa is your route. No other UK visa route comes close to its accessibility — no salary threshold, no employer sponsor, no minimum investment required.
You are a foreign professional (non-Hong Kong resident) wanting to work in Hong Kong: you need a Hong Kong employment visa — either the GEP (with a job offer from a Hong Kong employer) or the TTPS (if you are a high earner or top-university graduate).
You are a Hong Kong permanent resident or HKSAR citizen: you do not need a work visa to work in Hong Kong. You may still be eligible for the BNO Visa if you hold BN(O) status and wish to relocate to the UK.
You are weighing up whether to stay in Hong Kong or relocate to the UK: this is a life decision, not a visa question. Both pathways offer clear residency routes — 7 years to Hong Kong permanent residency, 5 years to UK ILR under the BNO Visa. The tax environment, lifestyle, family situation, and career prospects in each location are the deciding factors, not the immigration process.
